I read this book in as required reading for a criminology class at college. It has remained a favorite, and one of my go-to titles when I need to offer a book recommendation to someone. It will not disappoint.
I like sci-fi stories typically but decided to try this one since it was by one of my favorite sci-fi authors. The story is based on true events and there is a lot of historical information interspliced in between the narrative sections. I actually learned a lot about Victorian England in the course of listening to this.
The story was great, and long enough for a few car rides about 8. There aren't any voice actors or sound effects or anything like that. However, the person reading does so with enough great train robbery book report that you can easily differentiate the characters that are talking. The only strange thing is how they split it up amongst the 7 CDs: they don't end a chapter or anything, or even a paragraph. The CD just stops mid-paragraph and says to put in the next disc, then picks right up, great train robbery book report.
One of the discs I think it was 5 ends mid-conversation which I though was strange. But a minor nit overall. One of those books you simply enjoy reading and are sorry it has to end. Admiralu Top Contributor: Star Wars. This was an excellent book from the master, Michael Crichton. The story of a great train robbery in Victorian times could in the hands of a lesser author be boring.
Crichton turns this tale into a rollicking adventure, filled with insight into Victorian life along the way. We follow various members of the criminal underclass as Mr. Edward Pierce and cohorts plan and carryout the robbery that enthralled a nation. Little is known about Pierce, the facts that are known come from his compatriots. A brilliant upper class man, with a taste for the finer things in life decides to rob a train carrying gold bullion meant for a great train robbery book report in France to pay for the royal Crimean War.
The planning and execution of the "pull" as it was known, reads like a thriller. The ups and downs are fascinating, great train robbery book report, with insight into Victorian life along the way. This book was a great deal of fun to read and listen to, though the narration was not the greatest. Narration was good, though not as clear and concise as others I have listened to.
The trial and the aftermath were fascinating as well, though they were overshadowed by the Indian uprising. Having taken a break from reading his works, I had forgotten what fun his books are. Pierce was as brilliant as Maria try. This was an enjoyable, well-written book. My one complaint is that the author spoils the ending very early on, frequently alluding to things that take place later in the story or after it.
The story was still clever and fun to read along with, but the only mystery was seeing how they could pull things off, and it's a testament to the author's writing skills that he kept me interested without any real source of suspense.
Still, I think that this book could have gone from good to great with some changes in the style. The story was a lot of fun. Itâs kind of like oceans 11 set in Victorian England.
But it was spoiled for me by the fact that in the introduction the author clearly states that this is a historical account based on evidence gathered from historical artefacts. â voluminous courtroom testimony is preserved, along with journalistic accounts of the day.
It is from these sources that the following narrative is assembled. â The book also takes the format of a non fiction history book. Often using the narrative through line of the heist to segue off into short descriptions of the experience of living in s England.
In the final few pages of the book, something happened that just seemed a little too neat to great train robbery book report realistic. So I looked up the real life events on Wikipedia.
it turns out that in real life. A different number of thieves robbed a different number of safes in a different heist using a different number of keys that they obtained in a different way. Then at the end different things happened to them. Honestly, it would have been a fun book if it didnât cling so hard to itâs facade of historical accuracy.
I suppose I was lucky. I had no idea what the story was or how it would end. It strikes me as a masterful telling of a sociopath in a culture whose inconsistencies and inequities made it very easy to feel nothing but contempt for the established culture and the established ruling class. The cunning and patience of the master planner is impressive.
